Silica Fume is a material being used in construction. This material is being used to increase the strength of concrete. It is a highly pozzolanic material. It is basically a byproduct of ferrosilicon and silicon metal industries and has fine amorphous particles of silica.

This material has many performance characteristics that add value to the cement concrete.

High pozzolanic activity: Silica reacts with calcium hydroxide, which is a byproduct of cement hydration, which forms silicate hydrate which helps in gaining strength in concrete. The reaction reduces the amount of CH in concrete which can lead to resistance to chemical attack and improves durability.

High surface area: These fumes have a very large surface area, due to which their water-absorbing ability gets improved. Due to this, the segregation gets reduced, and the workability of the concrete is improved.

Filler effect: This material fills the voids and gaps inside the concrete due to which the strength of the concrete gets improved, and the binding of the concrete gets improved.

The mixture of silica fume inside the concrete can lead to the following ways:

Increased strength: Silica fumes can increase the flexural, compressive, and tensile strength of the concrete. This material should be used in an appropriate way as the proportion of the mixture should not be too low or else too high. The addition of 10% Silica Fume in concrete helps improve the compressive strength of the concrete by 20-30%.

Improving the durability: This material can help in improving the durability of the concrete by reducing its permeability to chloride ions and other aggressive chemicals. Moreover, it can enhance the resistance of concrete against abrasions and freeze-thaw deterioration.

Reduces water permeability: This material improves the water permeability of the concrete which can reduce water intake and discharge. This can be beneficial in applications wherein the structure is exposed to water like dam walls, reservoirs, and canal structures.

The adoption of the Silica Fume occurs in proportions that range between 5 to 15 percent of admi
