After the Kursk Offensive: A Turning Point in World War II
The Battle of Kursk, fought between July 5 and August 23, 1943, is often regarded as the largest tank battle in history and a critical turning point on the Eastern Front during World War II. Following the Kursk Offensive, the strategic initiative firmly shifted from the Axis powers to the Soviet Union, leading to a series of significant events and changes in the course of the war.
Outcome of the Kursk Offensive
The German forces, under the command of Field Marshal Erich von Manstein and General Walter Model, launched Operation Citadel with the aim of encircling and destroying Soviet forces in the Kursk salient. However, the Soviet Union had anticipated the attack and had fortified their positions heavily. The Red Army, led by General Georgy Zhukov and General Aleksandr Vasilevsky, was well-prepared with extensive defensive lines, minefields, and reserves.
Despite initial German advances, the offensive stalled due to fierce Soviet resistance and counterattacks. By August 23, the Germans were forced to call off Operation Citadel, marking a decisive Soviet victory. The heavy losses in men and materiel suffered by the Wehrmacht weakened their offensive capabilities significantly.
