1. Honey:  

Honey has been used for centuries as a natural remedy to treat many conditions, including sore throat. When experiencing sore throat, people prefer to take honey either in their tea or on its own. Recent studies suggested that it can be an effective cough suppressant as it contains dextromethorphan, a valuable component in managing cough. However, it is crucial to note that people under the age of one shouldn’t be given honey as it can cause infant botulism.  

2. Peppermint:   

Peppermint is not just a refreshing flavor for your drinks and meals, but also possesses the potential to relief sore throats. It contains methanol that can calm throat irritation. You can add peppermint to your tea by steeping dried peppermint leaves in boiled water.   

3. Marshmallow Root Infusion:  

Marshmallow root extracts have been used since ancient times to relieve sore throat discomfort. This plant possesses mucilage (gel-like substance) that lubricates the throat and allows ease while swallowing. Studies have shown that lozenges containing marshmallow root are not only effective but also safe, even at high doses.  

Additionally, marshmallow root may help soothe dry coughs. It can easily be made by placing a dried marshmallow root in a cheesecloth and making its bundle. Now, fill the jar with cold water, submerge the bundle in it, and cover the jar with a lid. Infuse it overnight for at least 8 hours before removing the bundle, and then sip it throughout the day for relief. 

4. Chamomile Tea:   

Chamomile tea with its anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties acts as a natural remedy for sore throat. Research shows that chamomile may help reduce inflammation in the eyes, nose, and throat, making it a soothing option for sore throats. Furthermore, it can stimulate the immune system to fight off infections that cause sore throat.  

5. Saltwater Gargle:   

It is a time-tested therapy for sore throat as it helps in reducing swelling and decrease the presence of bacteria in the throat. The solution is easy to make, just add half a teaspoon of salt into a full glass of warm water and gargle with it several times a day. 

6. Baking Soda Gargle:   

You might have heard less of it than salt water, but it also has potential to relieve the pain caused by sore throat. This solution has antimicrobial properties and can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. To prepare the solution, add ¼ teaspoon of baking soda and 1/8 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Gargle with this solution three or four times daily, followed by rinsing your mouth with plain water.  

7. Sage-Echinacea Throat Spray:  

Sage is widely known for its culinary uses and medical properties to help reduce throat pain. Echinacea is another herb with medical properties (anti-inflammatory and antibacterial). Making a throat spray of these two herbs can offer soothing relief. It is simple to make; boil water and pour it over sage and echinacea in a jar and leave the mixture for 30 minutes before straining. Finally, transfer the mixture to a spray bottle and use it to relieve throat pain 

8. Ginger Root Tea:  

Ginger, celebrated for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, offers relief for sore throats. Laboratory studies have shown that ginger extract can combat bacteria and viruses that are responsible for respiratory illnesses. To prepare the ginger root tea, peel and grate fresh ginger root, boil the water, and add the root to it for 10 mins. One can add honey and a squeeze of lemon juice to taste.    

9.  Licorice Root Tea:  

Licorice root, famous for its sweet flavor, also contains medicinal properties such as antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory. Like aspirin, licorice root can help reduce sore throat pain. To prepare it, combine ground licorice root with hot water and let it soak for 5 minutes. Later, strain it and use it. 

10. Soup  

Soup is a remedy for sore throat and cold. People with sore throats feel pain when swallowing food, meanwhile, soup acts as a comforting food while providing the necessary nutrients. Adding garlic in the soup enhances its effective properties as garlic contains bioactive compounds.  

Conditions Cause Sore Throat:  

Swollen Lymph Nodes  

Lymph nodes act as filters as they identify and trap harmful germs like bacteria and viruses before they can spread infection to other areas. They become swollen and tender while performing their function. When the lymph nodes close to the throat swell, they become sore and cause pain. Sometimes, only one node swells and becomes sore, causing a sore throat on one side.  

Postnasal Drip  

When excess mucus from nasal congestion drains down the back of the throat, it is called a postnasal drip. This continuous drainage can irritate the throat, leading to soreness or a scratchy feeling. Often, this irritation is localized, causing discomfort and a raw sensation on one side of the throat.  

Peritonsillar Abscess  

It is a pus-filled lump that forms in the tissues near the tonsils and occurs due to bacterial infection. This condition causes severe pain in one side of the throat and may also result in fever, swollen lymph nodes, and difficulty swallowing. Immediate medical attention is necessary for a peritonsillar abscess, as severe cases can obstruct breathing.
